The French “verbe” (verb)

A "verbe" (verb) is a word that expresses an action, a state, or a change. 

Examples: marcher, être, devenir.

In French, the verb is the core of the verbal group. It conjugates according to tense, mood, person, and number. It may be transitive, intransitive, pronominal, or impersonal.

1. verbe d’action   

Expresses an action. 

Ex. courir, écrire.


2. verbe d’état   

Expresses a state or condition. 

Ex. être, sembler, devenir.


3. verbe transitif   

Takes a direct object. 

Ex. lire un livre.


4. verbe intransitif   

Takes no direct object. 

Ex. dormir.


5. verbe pronominal   

Uses a reflexive pronoun. 

Ex. se lever.


6. verbe impersonnel   

Used only with “il”. 

Ex. il pleut.

Je mange une pomme. 

Il est fatigué. 

Nous allons à Paris. 

Elle se réveille tôt.
